Maps

2022-2024

The gaze toward fences gradually extended to digital maps during the pandemic. In a time when physical movement was limited, Google Maps became a visual gateway to explore the world remotely. I was drawn to satellite images - especially of desert or so-called "undeveloped" regions - where imperfect visual information offered by technology prompted new painterly interpretations. Blurred spaces, fragmented layers, and scenes stitched from multiple time zones revealed a different kind of visual experience. These distorted terrains were not rendered as literal reproductions, but rather reimagined as expressive, abstract landscapes.

As the work progressed, I became more deeply aware of the flaws and voids in the satellite images. I began responding to the missing or distorted information by reconstructing it through lines and color fields. These lines were not merely structural - they became sites of sensory rupture and active re-connection. This series adds emotional and imaginative layers onton data-driven images, expanding the language of painting and reconfiguring what a map can convey.
